Bingo is a game of chance where one can never know if they are going to win, but it sure is fun to try. For years, local bingo halls have been filling up with families, friends and neighbours. It is a community event that dates back as far as the 1500’s. The game is fun and simple. Perhaps it is for these reasons that it has transcended time. The rules of Bingo are easy. So easy in fact that anyone who recognizes letters and numbers can win.

First, there is a bingo “caller”. This is the person who will pull the bingo balls out of the machine and “call” them out to the audience. For example, “B5!” The next important things to know are the bingo cards. Different halls have different kinds of cards, but each has the same idea. The letters BINGO are across the top of the card. Numbers are randomly printed underneath the letters. Under the letter B, cards can have the numbers 1-15. Under I, the numbers range from 16-30. N has the numbers 31-45. The letter G has the numbers 46-60. And lastly, the letter O can have the numbers 61-75.

To win a traditional bingo, the cardholder must cover one line of the bingo card completely. This can either be a whole column, a whole row, or even a diagonal line. To cover the cards, cardholders can use a marker that those in the Bingo world refer to as a “dabber”, they can use plastic chips or they can use a perforated sheet to fold the numbers down. Once someone covers a line and calls Bingo, a “verifier” comes over to call back the covered numbers to the bingo caller to verify that the numbers the player has marked were indeed called. Upon verification, the bingo has been won and it’s on to the next card. The logistics of the game are made even more simple if you play bingo online.
