Bingo has been a tradition for years. Originally called “Beano”, Bingo was more of a country game. In the game, there would be a dealer who would select numbered discs from a cigar box and players would mark their cards with beans. “Beano” would be yelled if they won the game. Bingo would be used for many different events as well. From fund raising to parties to family get-togethers, bingo has always been a traditional game. Researched from inventors.com, Mary Bellis states, “The Germans also played a version of the game in the 1800s, but they used it as a child’s game to help students learn spelling and math.” So the game of Bingo was also used for educational purposes. The name “Bingo” came about by accident. When someone accidentally screamed, “Bingo!” instead of “Beano,” the game was then changed for American history. Bingo became increasingly popular. As Bellis says, “When bingo started being played in churches it became increasingly popular. By 1934, an estimated 10,000 bingo games were played weekly, and today more than $90 million dollars are spent on bingo each week in North America alone.” Many churches enjoyed playing Bingo. Many families would play at family get-togethers as well. Bingo’s history dates back to 1530. An Italian lottery was the first real reason Bingo came along. People would make bets and eventually it became a game. Edwin S. Lowe was the original creator of the Bingo game. The early game was a twelve card set for one dollar and a two dollar set with twenty-four cards. The game was an immediate success and put Lowe’s company squarely on its feet. The Bingo cards became huge with mathematics; it helped in so many ways for kids and adults. Teaching people socially and mathematically induced concepts that would further their learning was not why people attended this game. It was for the love of the game. They enjoyed the tradition of being able to hang out with each other and be around family.
