Penstemon digitalis - Foxglove Beardtongue

Penstemon digitalis, also known as Foxglove beardtongue, is a rather interesting native perennial wildflower. It grows easily from seed after only 30 days of cold, moist stratification. It transplants readily & will grow vigorously to a size suitable for planting outdoors in 4-6 weeks. The colors of the foliage includes a range of several shades of green, yellow, pink, purple, burgundy, & a touch of gold as autumn approaches. Foxglove beardtongue blooms rather early in June & July with a 4 foot blossom spike of white flowers with tinges of pink. These tubular blooms are excellent at attracting humming birds looking for nectar. It seems incongruous that these flowers are so attractive to birds & butterflies because the plant itself emits a rather unpleasant odor, at least to humans. The scent has been likened to smelly socks or a locker room! Walking near a group of Penstemon digitalis on a warm sunny day one will be aware of their presence without visual confirmation simply by the smell.

Since these flowers bloom relatively early in the season, the seed is ready for harvest in late summer to early autumn. The seed is quite small, an attractive burgundy color, & smells just as undesirable as the plant! After the seed has been harvested the foliage continues to change colors, deepening to gold, purple, burgundy, & dark green-colors that are typical of autumn. Often the foliage will maintain its color & structure through the winter & simply begin to grow again in the spring after breaking dormancy.

Foxglove beardtongue is an excellent addition to a garden for its colorful foliage & bird attracting flowers. It will thrive in full sun & medium to dry soil.

Penstemon digitalis is available at Ion Exchange.

A lush, green lawn naturally enhances the beauty of any home and garden. The most experienced Houston landscapers know that in the heat of the Texas summer, the key to maintaining an attractive lawn is even and consistent watering. Unfortunately, too many lawns suffer from being watered at the wrong times with the wrong amounts, all because the normal homeowner does not have the time to water their lawns sufficiently. However, many Texas residents are realizing that the benefits of using a custom sprinkler system can increase water conservation, convenience, and property value.

Custom sprinkler systems are more efficient because there is less water waste due to proper water timing and proper configuration of spray patterns. You can cover all areas of your yard, including the flower beds and shrubs, on a predetermined schedule. Most Houston landscapers would recommend that you water shady areas of your yard less frequently, but saturate them well, while sunny areas need to be watered more often.

Many Houston landscapers will tell you that the most popular benefit of using a custom sprinkler system is that it gives you the ability to continue to water your lawn while you are away from home. Before you leave on vacation, simply set the timer on your sprinkler system to water the zones that you select. You can feel free to leave home knowing that the time you spent mowing, edging and fertilizing your yard will not be wasted because of a lack of watering.

Using a sprinkler attached to a garden hose versus a custom sprinkler system proves to be the difference between a green lawn with dry patches and a stunning showplace. The appearance of your home is one of the primary factors in assessing the market value. A rich, luxuriant lawn contributes to the beauty and value of even the humblest estate. To increase your property’s value, Houston landscapers recommend installing a sprinkler system because one of the predominant features that current homebuyers look for when purchasing their next home is a custom sprinkler system.

Gardening is by far one of the most popular recreational activities in the United States. Apart from providing an additional aesthetic component for your home, gardening is proven to be a natural stress reliever especially for men and women in their prime.

A garden's success depends on how its foundations are laid out right from the beginning. Although the thought of starting a garden sounds easy, actually making plants grow can prove otherwise. Below you will come across useful tips and advice on how to start your very own garden properly without overspending on gardening products.

1) Go for a location that is close to a doorway or can be viewed from the windows without difficulty. Carefully place your garden where you can see and enjoy it more often. Make sure to pick a spot that can be easily reached by rain and sunlight as well.

2) Always start small. Gardening can be disappointing if your location is bigger than your experience. While the idea of having a big garden is appealing, you can always gradually add additional planting space later in your gardening career.

3) Get rid of unwanted weeds before planting anything. Besides being unsightly, weeds make it tough for seeds and plant stocks to germinate by depriving them of oxygen. Keep in mind to dig them up as soon as you see them.

4) Zero in on the ideal planting spots by turning the soil over with a trowel. Seeds will have a hard time growing if the soil is too hard. Soften the soil by sprinkling it with water to provide a damp environment for the seeds to take root.

5) Make sure to consult with your local nursery what plant varieties are suitable in your area. If it's your first time trying your hand at nurturing plants, go for the pre-grown ones since seeds can be quite tricky to raise for novice gardeners.

6) Water the soil before and after planting to help keep it stay as damp as possible. Avoid adding fertilizer until new tendrils have begun sprouting. Always make sure to use organic varieties to help keep your plants in great shape. Chemical ones tend to react with the soil and can cause growth problems in the long run.

7) Although constant watering somehow speeds up plant growth, hosing them down excessively can eventually drown them. Schedule your watering activities a day apart to avoid inadvertently wiping out your plants.

On the contrary, shopping for superb gardening tools these days can be a bane on the finances. Whether you opt for inferior products that don't really perform well, or costly varieties that may operate remarkably but can drain most of your cash, you are still squandering money. Why not use Mantis Garden Products coupon codes and get access to some of the best gardening instruments in the business without spending more than you ought to?

Some believe that it is different from peaches while others support the idea that it’s from the same group. Moreover, there are even issues that nectarine is a hybrid between a peach and plum.

But, if you are one of those people who grow this kind of plant, then you’ll know that its origin matters less. What matters most are the reasons why these trees would be best in your yard.

For the most obvious reason, people love to see flowering fruit trees. This is why; having nectarines planted in your garden would surely bring pleasure to a number of passers by as much as to you.

The nectarine varieties are all equally attractive. The dwarf nectarine trees, for example, are great landscape trees. The white nectarine tree is also going to bring splendor in your garden at the right time.

Another reason involves the promotion of health. It is true; health concerns millions and millions of people all over the world. Due to our lifestyle, our body is becoming more and more vulnerable hence, the campaign for eating more fruits and vegetables.

Though not most of us know it, this fruit is rich in antioxidants which are good for our skin. Additionally, it is also low in calorie but it high in beta carotene which has been known to prevent cancer.

Finally, like the dwarf peach tree, nectarine is also a great choice for yards with not too much space. Although there are nectarines that could grow high and expand wide, they can easily be prune or trimmed down into shorter height to avoid taking too much space in your garden.

Nectarine tree pruning is not as hard as what most people think. In fact, you don’t even have to cut its limbs one by one. All you have to do is cut the tree before the budding season arrives, this is naturally in spring.
